Tick Populations are Increasing in Maine, but so is Awareness of the Diseases They Carry

Maine is seeing an expansion in the habitat range and seasonal activity of tick populations, which are among the many factors causing an increase in the reported cases of tick-borne illnesses such as Lyme disease and anaplasmosis. Lyme disease is the most notable and can have drastic health effects, as was the case for Angela Coulombe following her diagnosis in 2007. Toward the end of her long recovery, Angela began running to regain her full strength. She soon realized her role as an advocate and created the Big Five for Lyme, with an ambitious plan to run the world’s five major marathons to raise awareness for chronic Lyme disease.

Angela is now hoping to run the Tokyo Marathon, which became the 6th World Major Marathon in 2013.
